Statement from the PCC Federation of Faculty and Academic Professionals Executive Council in Support of Free Speech and Peaceful Protest

PCCFFAP leaders support all who exercise their priceless fundamental right of free speech. Our union defends this right for all people, regardless of whether we agree with any particular message. This is especially important when dealing with complex, emotional topics like the current war in Gaza.

We believe we have a duty to denounce the suppression of any constitutionally protected speech or peaceful assembly. Equally, we have a duty to protect the right of every individual to exist in their communities without fear. A principled, vigorous defense of free speech entails an equally vigorous intolerance of hate speech in every form.

We commend the bravery and conviction of local, national, and worldwide students, faculty, and staff as they stand up for what they believe. In an environment of rising antisemitism and Islamophobia, the suppression of anti-war perspectives, and the ever-present threat of police violence, including violence against student, faculty, and staff protesters, we acknowledge that to speak out publicly is an act of moral courage.

With your help, our union will continue to work toward a future where all people are free, safe, and respected, because a better world is worth our struggle.
