We came to mediation last Friday prepared to move. Administration continues to balk at anything with a dollar amount attached, so we asked if they would at least consider our 11 low- or no-cost proposals. We thought we might be able to make a small amount of progress, build some good faith and momentum, and break the logjam.
The college’s response? They need more time to “crunch some numbers” on these no-cost proposals they have had for nearly nine months. As a result of their continued obstinacy, there was no movement on any proposal at Friday’s mediation session.
But that wasn’t all.
We know how much pressure the administration bargaining team is under, because as we fought to make some headway, President Bennings sent yet another email containing misleading information. We believe members deserve accurate information as we prepare to vote on a strike authorization.

When a COLA fails to keep up with inflation, it is a pay cut. Considering President Bennings received a COLA in July, the message coming from this administration feels like “austerity for thee, but not for me.” Our members deserve better.
Ultimately, it is us – through our solidarity with one another and our unwavering commitment to our students – who make this institution “one college.” When we stand together, we are the ones who uphold its mission, its integrity, and its future.
