One of the motivations that led me to run for office was to work on behalf of healthcare reform, and again much of that was due to my experiences with the Federation. We see up close and every day the effects of having a health care system where your ability to get decent coverage is tied to whether you're working full-time or part-time. Every time we sit down to bargain a contract we see the way that the rising cost of health insurance coverage is eating up more of the compensation pie. And the instability never seems to end. We at PCC have been able to do some great things over the years—controlling premium increases for people with families, creating benefit coverage for those working more than half-time and reimbursement for those working less than half-time. I wrote and sent this yesterday, January 17th—a significant date—from the airport in Orange County, CA, but due to a small glitch with our Fed email (it went to our new Gmail account rather than the PCC Lists) it's going out now. January 17th is a day to celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King's life—a call to service that accompanies this day annually, but also it is the 50th anniversary of the farewell address of another gifted speaker, Dwight Eisenhower, as he turned the presidency over to John Kennedy. I'll offer a couple thoughts on the January 8th tragedy and Ike's speech, followed by three Federation news items. Most who know me understand that I'm a consummate political junkie (coincidentally, my first involvement was Eisenhower's 1956 campaign), one who understood the disastrous November election, and who was outraged because it could have been avoided. So, too, I understood the inevitability of the Tucson shootings a week ago Saturday, and was outraged because it, too, could have been avoided. So rather than say something intemperate I decided to cool off for a week. A wise decision.
